Our optometrists at Amazing Eye Care specialize in treating dry eye disease using the latest research and advanced technology. Dry eye disease occurs when tears are unable to adequately lubricate the eyes due to reasons like insufficient tear production or poor-quality tears. This instability can lead to inflammation and damage to the eye's surface, causing discomfort like stinging or burning sensations. Certain situations like being on an airplane, in an air-conditioned room, riding a bike, or prolonged computer screen use can trigger dry eyes.

Dry Eye Symptoms

Signs and symptoms, which usually affect both eyes, may include:
  • Your eyes may experience a stinging, burning, or scratchy feeling.
  • You may notice stringy mucus in or around your eyes.
  • Light sensitivity may be heightened.
  • Your eyes may appear red.
  • You may feel as though there is something in your eyes.
  • Wearing contact lenses may become challenging.
  • Nighttime driving may become more difficult.
  • Your eyes may become watery as a response to the irritation caused by dryness.
  • Your vision may become blurred or you may experience eye fatigue.

Dry Eye Causes

Inflammation

It is essential to promptly and aggressively treat ocular inflammation, which is driven by systemic inflammation. This inflammation can cause long-term damage to the oil and water glands in the eyes, worsening dry eye symptoms and impeding treatment effectiveness. Early intervention to address ocular inflammation and explore ways to improve systemic inflammation management is crucial.

Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD)

Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD) is caused by the oil becoming semi-solid instead of liquid, mainly due to diet and inflammation. As a result, the glands become blocked and stop releasing oil into the tear film. This problem is worsened for individuals who spend extended periods of time on electronic devices. It is crucial to treat blocked glands promptly to avoid additional complications. By liquefying the oil, symptoms such as burning and blurred vision between blinks can be alleviated, while also providing protection and nourishment to the eyes.

Bacteria

An overgrowth of bacteria and/or mites can lead to inflammation on the eyelid, causing toxins to be released into the tear film. This can cause eye irritation, redness, and inflammation. To treat this problem, we will use topical cleansers, antibiotics, and/or mechanical exfoliators to remove the bacteria and mites.

Lid function

Having proper lid function is essential for protecting and keeping the ocular surface hydrated. In some cases, blink exercises and specialized masks can help address issues, but there are situations where a surgical referral may be needed in the future.

Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye (ADDE)

It is absolutely crucial to prioritize staying hydrated and utilizing pharmaceuticals or punctal occlusion when necessary. Inflammation can cause irreversible harm to the lacrimal gland, even without the presence of Sjogren's Disease.
