At Amazing Eye Care, our optometrists specialize in treating dry eye disease using the latest research and advanced technology.

Dry eye disease occurs when your tears are unable to adequately lubricate your eyes. There are various reasons for inadequate and unstable tears, such as insufficient tear production or poor-quality tears. This instability of tears leads to inflammation and damage to the surface of the eye.

Dry eyes can be uncomfortable, causing a stinging or burning sensation. Certain situations, such as being on an airplane, in an air-conditioned room, riding a bike, or prolonged computer screen use, can trigger dry eyes.

Dry Eye Symptoms

Signs and symptoms, which usually affect both eyes, may include:
  • Your eyes may experience a stinging, burning, or scratchy feeling.
  • You may notice stringy mucus in or around your eyes.
  • Light sensitivity may be heightened.
  • Your eyes may appear red.
  • You may feel as though there is something in your eyes.
  • Wearing contact lenses may become challenging.
  • Nighttime driving may become more difficult.
  • Your eyes may become watery as a response to the irritation caused by dryness.
  • Your vision may become blurred or you may experience eye fatigue.

Dry Eye Causes

Inflammation

Treating ocular inflammation promptly and aggressively is crucial as it is fueled by systemic inflammation. This inflammation in the eyes leads to long-term damage to the oil and water glands, exacerbating dry eye symptoms and hindering the effectiveness of treatment. Therefore, it is important to address ocular inflammation early on and explore methods to enhance the management of systemic inflammation.

Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD)

Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD) occurs when the oil created is semi-solid instead of liquid, primarily influenced by diet and inflammation. Over time, the glands become clogged and stop excreting oil into the tear film. This process is accelerated in those spending long hours on devices. Treating clogged glands aggressively is essential to prevent further loss. Liquifying the oil helps prevent burning and blur between blinks, while also protecting and nourishing the ocular surface.

Bacteria

The overgrowth of bacteria and/or mites leads to inflammation of the edge of the eyelid, which results in the release of toxins into the tear film. These toxins further irritate the eye, causing redness and inflammation on the surface of the eye. To eliminate this problem, we will use topical cleansers, antibiotics, and/or mechanical exfoliators to remove the intrusion.

Lid function

It is crucial to have proper lid function in order to protect and keep the ocular surface hydrated. While certain problems can be addressed through blink exercises and specialized masks, there are cases where a surgical referral may be necessary in the long run.

Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye (ADDE)

It is crucial to emphasize the importance of hydration and the use of pharmaceuticals and/or punctal occlusion when necessary, as inflammation can cause permanent damage to the lacrimal gland, regardless of whether Sjogren's Disease is present or not.
